BUSTER JACKSON PASSES

The Island Dragway racing family recently lost another long-time member with the passing of Buster Jackson.

Jackson was a well-known competitor going back to the early days of Island Dragway.  In the 1960s Buster made a name for himself at the wheel of his 63 Chevy racing in the old Modified Eliminator in the gas classes.  Before he moved on to a first generation Camaro to improve the aerodynamics to become more competitive in the eliminator, he powered his racer with the early version of the famous 427 big block motor.  His “Soul Shaker” moniker was easily recognized when he came to the line, and anyone in the opposite lane knew he had to be on his game to get past the Shaker.  One of Buster’s biggest rivalries was with George W. Shaw, and these two would get together on occasion just to see who had the faster Camaro in Morristown.

Buster finished up his racing career at the wheel of a later model Camaro and over the years made fewer appearances in the bracket competition.  While no longer a regular, Buster would periodically show up to watch the races, always with a smile on his face and a “how are you” on his lips.

Racing has changed over the years and the people involved have changed along with it.  But Buster Jackson will always be remembered as the Soul Shaker.  And he will always be connected to the history and spirit of Island Dragway.

So Buster, thanks for the memories.  Rest in Peace.
