MARTIN AND SONDERFAN RETURN TO TOP
DOCZI AND FERGUSON SCORE
Todd Martin and Craig Sonderfan qualified for the bracket finals in the first half of the points season, guaranteeing a position on the team representing Island Dragway. But since the start of the second half of the points, neither Martin nor Sonderfan has gotten a whiff of a final round let alone posed for a picture in the winner’s circle. Finally, in the sixth race in a string that began in July they made it to the trophy round and sealed the deal, showing that cream rises to the top, even if it takes a little while to do so.
Martin grabbed his third Super Pro victory overall and ran his record to three for three in final round appearances by edging out Greg Georges and his Camaro in a tight matchup. Martin beat John Tesori and Brian Bielen in the early going and finished off Barry Luyster in the quarters that set him up for a bye run in the semifinal round. Georges outran a pair of REDs in the form of Jean Ann Zetterberg and Don Algieri and soloed the QF. In that quarterfinal, David Hebig was better than Kevin Gnehm to earn the opportunity to race Georges in the semis. Georges left better and recorded a 7.65 at 134 that downed Hebig’s 6.23, 165. Georges picked up a little extra head start on the final but his .008 advantage disappeared at the finish line when he was a couple hundredths off at 7.65 and 134.02. Martin flashed the win light via his posting of 8.32 seconds at a speed of 156.81 mph.
